What to Wear to Your Engagement Photos, According to a Boise Idaho Wedding Photographer

Tips for outfits for and Engagement Session

This post is geared towards what to wear to your engagement photos. The question I get over and over again is “What do we wear for our engagement session?”  I send out a bridal magazine and blog posts. However, after a recent experience I think there is more to be said about this topic. This has been on my mind for the last month and a half. Call it a learning experience on my end. I know I can not fully control what my couples wear nor would I ever want to.  I truly believe that your photos should directly reflect your style and personality. Most importantly, they should highlight what you are comfortable in.

I always have my couples bring two outfits. A dressy outfit that they feel comfortable in and a casual outfit that showcases their style and personality.  My ultimate goal is to capture you as a couple in your element.  Over the last few weeks I have come up with some more guidance in this department.  Below you will find some suggestions on what to wear for your engagement session. As well as what to consider when picking out outfits.

Be Authentic

1st and foremost Be Authentic. I can not bold this enough. When choosing an outfit, choose what you feel good in. Wear what genuinely reflects your style and you feel confident and natural in. You never want to feel uncomfortable. Remember I am your photographer. I can take your photo. However, if you are not comfortable in what you are wearing, that will shine through in your photos.

2nd Coordinate, Don’t Match. Pick colors and styles that complement each other, like soft blues/pinks with creams/grays, not identical outfits or similar shades.  I know it’s hard but it’s better to have colors that work together instead of competing with each other. Avoid the shades that are closely matched. If all else fails go with neutral colors that complement. Below you will see some examples of neutral colors that work well together.

Always Choose Comfort

3rd Comfort is Key. When choosing outfits this is a must! If you are not comfortable in the outfits you picked it will show through the photos. Well-fitting clothes that aren’t too tight or baggy or too short ensure comfort and fewer adjustments or possible issues.

4th and final suggestion but one of the more important suggestions Consider the Location & Season. Seasons matter for photography along with what you wear.  Plan your engagement photos for the season you are hoping for. If you are unsure of what that entails I have a blog post for location tips during a particular season you can find a post HERE.

So you think you have an idea of what you want to wear now? Where do you shop? How do you go about finding an outfit?  This should be mentioned that this part is completely up to you. I can give you suggestions.  I always suggest planning ahead when ordering online. This way, you can try the outfit on and return it if needed.  I also suggest looking locally. Try on in store to ensure comfort in whatever you choose.

What to wear to your Engagement Photos

If you are needing a fresh glow for your session, think of a spray tan. I have a great Gal for that tan look.  She does a great job. I have used her several times and have never been disappointed. You can grab her instagram HERE.  Also splurge and get your nails done.  Little things like that not only make you feel extra special but add to your photos.  If you want to go all out have your makeup done. Professional makeup photographs differently and adds dimension. Use your trial for your engagement session. Most of my portfolio work showcases professional makeup.

Local Stores

Local Stores that I love for dresses that fit your style from Long Maxi to cute short ones. These stores are all at the Village in Meridian, Idaho. Take the time to find something that you love. Make sure it is comfortable and fits your body type. It Make sure you can move your arms and twirl around with ease. This will make the whole experience more enjoyable and fun. Hopefully these helpful tips for what to wear to your engagement photos will help down the road.

Bhome: They have great long dresses that flow well and short ones that are fun and playful.

Francesca’s: Great seasonal colors and lots of options on lengths.

Cotton:On: Great options for casual and neutral colors.
